Dozens of people were arrested on the afternoon of Wednesday, November 13, during a banned pro-Palestinian demonstration in Amsterdam, the scene of violent attacks the week of November 4-10 against Israeli soccer fans.
Protesters gathered on Dam Square in central Amsterdam, wearing keffiyehs and chanting slogans. The detainees were transferred to buses waiting nearby, Agence France-Presse correspondents said.
This is the second pro-Palestinian demonstration organized, despite the ban on gatherings in the city, after the violence of the week of November 4-10.
On the night of November 7-8, after a Europa League match between Ajax Amsterdam and the Israeli team Maccabi Tel-Aviv, Maccabi fans were chased and beaten in the streets of Amsterdam. Authorities reported that five people were briefly hospitalized.
These attacks, branded as anti-Semitic in particular by Israel and Dutch authorities, sparked outrage in many Western capitals. Isolated incidents broke out before the match, including anti-Arab chants by Maccabi fans.
This violence occurred in a context of polarization in Europe, with an increase in anti-Semitic, anti-Israel and Islamophobic acts since the start of the war between Israel and the Islamist movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
