South Dakota Senator John Thune, 63, was elected head of the Republican majority in the US Senate. This was reported by the Telegram channel “Glavnoe” with reference to the AP agency.
It should be noted that Thune, like his predecessor Mitch McConnell, has repeatedly sparred with President-elect Donald Trump in the past. Most notably, he refused to challenge the results of the 2020 election.

The Republican Party will obtain a majority in the Senate, the upper house of the United States Congress, according to the results of the vote. Republicans will gain 53 seats, while Democrats will retain 47.
