Kazakhstan has set a carbon emissions record

Kazakhstan has set a record for carbon emissions, Sputnik Kazakhstan reports. The energy sector is the one that contributes the most to emissions.

Mainly due to the consumption of fossil fuels such as oil and coal. The data includes emissions from energy production, flaring, industrial processes, and the transportation and distribution of fossil fuels.

According to the Energy Institute, in 2023 Kazakhstan spent 343 billion tenge ($712.8 million) on environmental protection, more than 20% more than the previous year.

Costs have increased for the third year in a row to keep technologies and businesses running that prevent, reduce or eliminate pollutants.

Globally, almost a third of carbon emissions in 2023 came from China: 12.6 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, more than the combined emissions of the entire Western Hemisphere and Europe. The reason is the dependence on coal and oil.

Second place in terms of emissions in 2023 was occupied by the United States. In third place is India, which is actively investing in the coal industry.
