Rescuers rescue 60 migrants who spent the night adrift on the west coast of El Hierro

This Tuesday, Maritime Rescue located a boat with 60 people on board, including four children. He canoewho had been wanted since Monday evening, was located a few kilometers from the southwest coast of the island, in the coastal area known as the Las Calmas Sea, which includes the distance between the La Restinga pier and the Orchille lighthouse.

The sea situation (heavy swell) complicated the rescue task. Due to weather conditions, disembarkation will take place at the port of La Estaca and not at La Restinga as planned. The Red Cross has reported that several of these people are in delicate health.

The Guardamar Caliope went to meet the boat, which warned that it was adrift in a distress call recorded by an antenna in the municipality of El Pinar.

Throughout the morning, from the cayuco, they communicated with the Emergency and Security Coordination Center (CECOES), which made it very difficult to locate the exact coordinates of the rescue.

After a first search, carried out yesterday evening and until dawn by the Salvamar Menkalinan and the Helimer 201, was unsuccessful, this Tuesday a new device was activated composed of the Guardamar Caliope, the patrol boat Río Ara, the Civil Guard, and the Red Cross rescue boat Hades. By air, a helicopter from the Canary Islands Government Emergency and Rescue Group and the Sasemar 103 aircraft joined the team.

These searches are taking place along the same coastal strip where the sinking of another canoe took place on Saturday, and in which 54 people disappeared. For the moment, no more bodies have been found than the nine found the night of the accident, three of which were buried this Monday at the El Mocanal cemetery.
