Sánchez names Ribera as Commission candidate for climate vice-presidency

Despite the last-minute wait, the expected scenario came true. The government of Pedro Sanchez officially appointed the third vice-president on Wednesday, Therese Riberaas Spain’s candidate to be part of the College of Commissioners that Ursula von der Leyen will lead during her second term as head of the Community Executive between 2024 and 2027.

Although it was already known in advance, the appointment took place shortly before the end of the scheduled period. The German asked all governments to send their proposal by August 30, with the aim of being able to proceed with the distribution of portfolios as early as next week.

Ribera aspires to lead a powerful vice presidency in the team of Von der Leyen responsible for coordinating all aspects related to the fight against climate change, in line with the work she is doing in the Sánchez government. A position that is practically guaranteed since she is the main representative of the socialist family in the Commission and no one disputes her technical skills for this position.
