Storm causes flooding in Tarragona, advances towards Barcelona coast and forces more trains to be suspended

The rainstorm caused flooding in the Tarragona region in the early hours of Monday. While the southern regions of Catalonia have paralyzed part of the activity due to the weather forecast, the storm front is now advancing towards the central coastal and pre-coastal sectors, around the metropolitan region of Barcelona.

The Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat) has issued a severe weather warning until 8:25 a.m. in the regions of Penedès, central and pre-coastal and Ponent. Concretely, the risk is very high in Anoia, Alt Penedès, Baix Penedès, Garraf and Baix Llobregat, while it is high in Barcelonès, Vallès Occidental, Bages, Solsonès, Segarra, Noguera, Alt Urgell and Pallars Jussà. There is a possibility of rocks measuring more than two centimeters, wind gusts greater than 25 meters per second, and tornadoes and garden hoses. In addition to a storm warning of more than 100 liters per square meter in 24 hours in central Catalonia and on the central coast and pre-coast.

During the night, heavy showers fell on the Camp de Tarragona coast, mainly in Tarragonès. The showers progressed in Terres de l’Ebre, leaving a lot of water in a short time. Between this Sunday and until five a.m. this Monday, Météocat estimates that more than 100 liters per square meter of precipitation fell at the Tarragona Camp. However, he added that the most intense and abundant rains did not fall on the stations of the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat).

The Generalitat firefighters received 164 warnings about rain between 8:00 p.m. this Sunday and 7:00 a.m. this Monday. The majority came from the city of Tarragona. Among other things, emergency services rescued four people isolated by water in the Catllar area, who were relocated to relatives. In addition, they witnessed several floods and the collapse of a wall in Picamoixons.

Rail traffic on the R4 is interrupted between Vilafranca del Penedès and Sant Vicenç de Calders due to unfavorable weather conditions, as reported by Renfe. This is in addition to the lines already canceled in southern Catalonia until 3:00 p.m.

The regions with reduced mobility are Baix Ebre, Montsià, Terra Alta, Ribera d’Ebre, Baix Camp, Priorat, Tarragonès, Alt Camp and Baix Penedès. Among other measures, in this area, classes have been suspended for a total of 126,587 students, which represents 7.9% of all students in Catalonia. Civil Protection also sent an alert to the cell phones of people in these areas asking them to exercise caution.
