According to British intelligence, the level of convictions for high treason in Russia has reached its highest level in the last 9 years. In particular, more sentences of this type were handed down in the first six months of 2024 than in the entire previous year, as confirmed by data from the Russian Ministry of Justice.
In addition, the number of accusations under articles related to extremism, terrorism and so-called “disinformation” has increased. These statistics, according to British intelligence, indicate the Russian government’s increasing reliance on demonstrative intimidation measures to control opposition groups.
“Prior to the large-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian leaders used less aggressive methods to suppress dissent,” notes the British Ministry of Defense.
Popular support for the war.
Recall that Russia has been carrying out active military operations against Ukraine since February 21, 2022. According to a survey by the Levada Center, about 75% of Russians surveyed support military action. Among those who do not agree with the Kremlin’s policies are mainly young people under 30 years of age. At the same time, about 15% do not categorically support the war and some of them went abroad.
