US strikes Iran-linked targets in Syria

US forces carried out strikes on Monday, November 11, against nine targets linked to Iranian-backed groups in Syria in response to attacks against Washington troops in the country, the Pentagon announced.

“These strikes will diminish the ability of [ces] groups to plan and launch attacks against US and coalition forces.”declared the Pentagon, in reference to the international coalition against the jihadist organization Islamic State (IS) deployed in Syria.

The Pentagon did not specify which groups were attacked or report on the victims.

Jihadist cells are still active

But according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the strikes killed four members of groups linked to Iran.

The United States has deployed about 2,500 troops to Iraq and 900 to Syria as part of an international coalition created in 2014 to fight ISIS, which had taken control of entire swaths of Syrian and Iraqi territory before being defeated in 2019.

But jihadist cells remain active, especially in rural and remote areas, outside the big cities.
