West Azerbaijan Chronicle: In “Kitabi-Dada Gorgud” the name of Okchuoglu is mentioned as an ethnotoponym.

The next programme in the West Azerbaijan Chronicle project was aired today.

The interviewer of journalist Rufik Ismayilov was Naila Huseynova, a senior researcher at the Institute of History and Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (ANAS), a doctor of history and an associate professor.

He spoke from Okchuoglu village, Amasiya district, Shorayel district, West Azerbaijan. He said that childhood memories of his ancestral homeland never left him. Speaking about the history and culture of the village, the scientist stressed that the name of Oxchuoglu was mentioned as an ethnotoponym in “Kitabi-Dade Gorgud”.

Naila Huseynova noted that Western Azerbaijan in general, including the Shorayel region, has historically experienced a bitter fate and our compatriots have faced various hardships and oppressions. She said that not only in 1905, 1918, 1988 of the last century, but also at the end of the 19th century, there were many raids by Armenians on the village of Oxchuoglu and the local population was displaced from their homes.

Alim said that he had heard from older generations and from his own parents about Armenian attacks on Okchuoglu from the area called Ganlijan valley. He said that after the treaties of “Gulüstan” of 1813 and “Turkmenchay” of 1828, mass migration of Armenians to Western Azerbaijan and Sherayel district began. This gradually resulted in the repression of local Azerbaijanis.

Naila Huseynova noted that discrimination by Armenians against Azerbaijanis became part of state policy and our compatriots were subjected to ethnic cleansing, deportations and even genocide. The culmination of these events occurred in 1988. During that period, in general, all our compatriots were forcibly expelled from the territory of Western Azerbaijan and subjected to physical and mental torture.

Speaking about the creation of the West Azerbaijan Community and the steps taken in this direction, N. Huseynova said that as a scientist she always tries to support the activities of the Community. She noted that a map of Yerevan is kept in the Moscow archive and said that she wants to bring this historically significant material to Azerbaijan. According to her, in order to speed up the return of West Azerbaijan, we must convey our truths to the world community and use the principles of international law.

It should be recalled that the aim of the Western Azerbaijan Chronicle project is to preserve and promote the name of our historical lands, as well as to learn about the deportation of Azerbaijanis by Armenians, the toponyms that existed in these territories, but their names. Countless examples of underground and surface material culture have been erased: ancient settlements, necropolises, burial mounds, remains of a castle, palace and fortification, caravansary, bridges, burial chests, stone crosses, statues of horses and rams, temples, churches. Mosques, pyres and hearths are revealed, and the facts confirming that the area is a pure Oghuz-Turk settlement are communicated to the world community.

Also the president Ilham Aliyev Regarding Western Azerbaijan, he said: “The map of the beginning of the 20th century once again shows that Western Azerbaijan is the historical land of Azerbaijan, the names of cities and villages are of Azerbaijani origin, and we know very well that Azerbaijani people have lived on the territory of present-day Armenia throughout history. Now the main task is to make the world community aware of this as well,” – according to him, it is about promoting the duties arising from the Concept of Return of the Western Azerbaijani Community developed by him.

It also aims to enlighten the thoughts of historians and researchers about West Azerbaijan and the life stories of people who were deported.
