Georgian authorities added to the register of foreign agents for the first time

For the first time, the Georgian authorities added five non-governmental organizations to the register of foreign agents: “Youth Organization of Ukrainians in Georgia – Svitanok”, “Union of Farmers and Agricultural Workers”, “Kutaisi Youth House”, “Christian Union ” and “Jewish Cultural and Educational Fund.”

In September, 476 organizations requested voluntary registration in the registry.

In total, there are around 31 thousand organizations in the country that, according to the authorities, receive financing from abroad.

In spring, Georgia adopted the law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence.” NGOs and media outlets that receive foreign funding of more than 20% of their annual income must register as organizations serving the interests of a foreign power. They must complete an annual financial statement; Anyone who evades registration as a foreign agent or fails to file a declaration faces a fine of up to 25,000 lari (about $9,000).
